Mitiga Solutions and Endeavor Spain have published a new report examining how prepared organisations in Spain are for the operational and financial consequences of physical climate risk.
The research brings together insights from around 50 organisations, including startups, SMEs and large enterprises working across finance, technology, energy, transportation and hospitality.
Its central conclusion is clear: the cost of failing to prepare for physical climate risk can significantly exceed the cost of taking action.
Spain’s climate preparedness gap
Floods, wildfires, water stress, infrastructure disruption and power outages are already affecting organisations across Spain.
However, many businesses still struggle to assess how changing climate conditions could affect their assets, operations and long-term plans. The report examines how organisations currently approach climate-risk assessment, the barriers slowing adaptation and the areas where the largest preparedness gaps remain.
It also looks at what more advanced organisations are already doing differently.
From compliance to business strategy
Climate resilience is often treated primarily as a reporting or compliance requirement. The report argues that it should instead form part of core business strategy.
Physical climate risk can influence operational continuity, asset value, investment decisions, supply chains and future growth. Understanding those effects allows organisations to prioritise adaptation measures and direct resources towards the areas where they will have the greatest impact.
The findings also show that climate risk rarely appears as one isolated event. It develops over time as baseline conditions change and different hazards interact with existing operational vulnerabilities.
Supporting organisations at every stage
The report is designed for organisations at different stages of their climate-risk journey, from startups beginning to assess their exposure to large companies strengthening established resilience programmes.
It outlines practical first steps for climate-risk screening and explains how EarthScan™ Preview and EarthScan™ can help organisations identify exposure, understand potential impacts and begin building a more informed adaptation strategy.
