Climate Data Scientist

Role overview

We are looking for someone to work on the design and development of models powering EarthScan, our platform that provides essential information on climate risks for reporting and investment purposes. These proprietary models are crucial to helping our customers understand the potential impact of climate change on their assets. As such, we are looking for a generalist physical climate risk modeler able to work on Earthscan, who is happy to face new challenges and learn on the job, and work with the team to enhance all our atmospheric and hydrological hazard models.

As part of our continued growth, we are looking to expand and refine our atmospheric and hydrological hazard models and climate risk analyses, taking them to the next level of quality.

Your impact

You are someone who can translate physical climate-related risks associated with atmospheric processes (e.g. precipitation extremes, convective storms) into the climate risk setting. You consider the details of the physical climate processes, while acknowledging the uncertainty of climate predictions. You understand how to communicate physical climate-related atmospheric risk to clients, both on its own and in relation to other climate perils.

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to the technical ownership of Mitiga’s physical climate-related atmospheric hazard models, collaborating with the product and science teams to define the development roadmap for our physical climate risk products. Lead work to further validate our in-house atmospheric hazard models.
  • Lead the exploration and evaluation of 3rd party datasets that could complement our current offering, including possible integration into our current technology.
  • Work with our business and risk teams on appropriate ways to incorporate physical climate-related atmospheric risk into our ratings and impact calculations.
  • Be the ‘go-to’ expert for questions about physical climate-related atmospheric hazards both within the company and with our customers.

Requirements

We are seeking an atmospheric physicist/climate scientist with a strong technical modeling background to join our dynamic team.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in atmospheric hazard modelling, either Academic or Industry: At least 2 years of industry experience applying climate risk models and risk assessment methodologies is favored.
  • Technical Expertise: Possess a deep understanding of multi-scale atmospheric hazard modelling. Experience of hands-on atmospheric hazard modelling, including statistical modelling of extremes (e.g. extreme value theory).
  • Climate Change Impact: Demonstrate an understanding of how climate change factors can influence physical related risks and atmospheric hazard dynamics and extremes.
  • Proven Delivery: Experience of successfully delivering atmospheric hazard risk analyses to clients, ensuring clear insights.
  • Hands-on Approach: Actively participate in the modelling process, contributing alongside our close-knit team. Skills in Python (or similar) and machine learning are highly desired.
  • Data-Driven Approach: Possess a strong analytical mind and utilize data effectively to inform decision-making.
  • Effective Communication: Have excellent stakeholder communication skills, enabling you to translate complex technical information into clear and concise messaging for diverse audiences.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Demonstrate the ability to navigate ambiguous project requirements and develop clear solutions that drive the project forward.
