Climate Data Scientist
Role overview
We’re looking for a Climate Data Scientist to support our Data and Science teams in delivering impactful solutions. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in processing climate datasets, developing machine learning methodologies, and contributing to innovative product creation through Research & Innovation projects.
This role requires expertise in data analysis, machine learning or climate science, and Python programming, working within an agile team environment.
What you'll do
- Refine existing methodologies for natural hazard and risk mapping to better align with market needs in close collaboration with product teams.
- Integrate big datasets, implement advanced algorithms, and apply cutting-edge methodologies to improve data analysis and climate modeling.
- Work closely with the data engineering team to design and deploy applications, coordinating infrastructure needs, version control, CI/CD processes, data storage, and deployment of analytics or model outputs.
- Support the Science and Data teams to deliver reports on climate-related projects.
- Participate in regular meetings; support climate data interpretation, model validation, preprocessing,and integration of scientific requirements into analytical and machine learning workflows.
- Contribute to the creation of new climate-related products and solutions.
What you'll bring
- Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in atmospheric science, computer science, mathematics,physics, climate/earth system science, hydrology, or a related field.
- 1–2 years of experience working with data analysis and statistical methods.
- Preferred experience in climate science, machine learning and/or risk assessment.
- Experience handling large, multi-dimensional datasets (e.g., netCDF, TIFF/GeoTIFF).
- Strong programming skills in Python, preferably with xarray, and solid understanding of software engineering principles.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-based data storage (e.g., Azure Blob, Azure CLI) for large-scale datasets.
- Proficiency with Git/GitHub, including pull-request workflows and conflict resolution.
- Experience with QGIS for visualization, spatial data inspection, and geoprocessing (preferred).
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within an Agile team environment.
- Strong multitasking skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Passion for translating climate science into actionable insights for businesses and communities.
